“I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.”
— Philippians 3:8
Oil Poured Out
God! We were made through Him and for Him, and our very existence is sustained by Him at every moment. Everything we are and have is a gift from Him, from the most basic breath we take, to the most extravagant of miracles, to the eternal and earth-shattering reality of God becoming one of us to take on our sin and make it possible for us to come back into relationship with Him. And He gives us these gifts freely, in perfect love, even when we take them for granted or turn around and spit in His face. Our crucified and risen Lord Jesus is the perfect Bridegroom, down on one knee, waiting for a free response from His Beloved, His people. He is waiting for our yes.
Oil Poured Out is the story of Christiana, a young girl who has chosen to walk with the Lord. Her love for Him makes her do things that those in her life find odd. Faced with rejection and her former friends spitting in her own face as a result, she begins to wonder if it’s worth it to give up her visible comfort for an invisible God.
In the midst of her confusion, she is met by one of her schoolteachers, who gives her a book to read to pass the time while she’s feeling alone. Upon opening the book, she is surprised to find that the pages come alive and begin to change her present-day reality into an ancient world, filled with mystery, adventure, and living saints of the past who have found beyond the shadow of a doubt that—no matter the response of those who don’t yet know it—Jesus is worth it. No matter what it costs, it is worth giving everything to the One who has given everything to us.
May we become a people who give the extravagant yes that He longs for.
